Daokrajai Lanna Fine Teas

Welcome to Daokrajai Lanna Thai Teas

Daokrajai Lanna Fine Teas are the result of the dedication, enthusiasm and co-operation between an Englishman and a family of tea farmers in Northern Thailand.

It’s tea time on a windy mountainside in Northern Thailand, and John Wombwell sips appreciatively at a cup of his favorite brew.

“lt’s an Oolong green tea, my favorite,” he says. “lt has a sweet, creamy texture and is easy on the palate. I drink it every day.”

There’s no shortage of John’s favorite tea, which grows in abundance on a plantation which he promotes internationally.

The Oolong and four other varieties grown on the Daokrajai estate near Mae Salong in Chiang Rai Province, are offered at restaurants, hotels, spas, tea shops, online and at an ever growing number of outlets worldwide.

John has always been an appreciative tea-drinker- “I remember my grandmother, a farmer’s wife in England, and her utter disdain for tea-bags, and I suppose something of her attitude rubbed off on me.”

During a visit to Thailand John heard of the tea plantations in the north and this led him to discover an estate near Mae Salong, the center of tea growing in Northern Thailand and of an agricultural area mostly farmed by hill tribe villagers and descendants of Chinese refugees from the 1949 Communist takeover.

John fell in love with the country, the people and the farmers on the estate and offered to help market the tea, in Thailand and abroad.

“lt’s been many years of quite hard work but certainly a worthwhile project,” he says with almost missionary zeal.

He makes sure that the tea is grown organically. “Growers in China like to use chemical insecticides and fertilizer, but they’re banned at the Daokrajai estate,” he said.

The estate has been worked for nearly 40 years by the same family, who have taken John into their hearts, enthusiastically backing his efforts to market the tea outside Thailand.

Since those early days Daokrajai teas have become known amongst an ever growing number of tea lovers and have a reputation for quality, sound business practices and unparallelled customer service.

John Wombwell

“I don’t think of Daokrajai Lanna Fine Teas as a business so much as a community of like minded tea enthusiasts.

I am determined that the lovely people that cultivate them should get the credit and rewards they deserve for their dedication and skill.”

The business operates as Daokrajai Lanna Fine Teas (Thailand) Co. Ltd a fully registered Thai Company.

The tea plantation is approximately 550 acres.

Although this may seem a large area, it is really very small in terms of tea production.

It does however allow the workers to tend the tea shrubs more closely and to ensure that the tea plants are always in the best condition for producing the best tea.

The tea farm is split into 2 plantations. The smaller plantation also contains the main processing facility and is nearer to Chiang Rai city.

The main plantation is much higher in the mountains, and it takes more than an hour in a 4×4 vehicle to reach it.

The workers at the larger plantation are given their own housing, and importantly, their own land to produce whatever they wish.

Many decide to produce rice for themselves, and to also sell at the local markets for their own profit.

By having 2 plantations at different elevations the farm can produce different types of tea; some which thrive at lower elevations, and those that favour higher.

The combination of the 2 plantations allows us to bring to you a wide variety of teas, which is unusual to find in a single tea farm.

“Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat everyday.”
It may now be a cliché, but it is very true.

Most people do not want a hand out, but a hand up.
They do not want aid, but the chance to sell their wares and support themselves.

A hand up for people who earn little compared to western values is exactly what we are trying to accomplish by bringing these teas to you.

The tea farm produces some extraordinarily fine teas, all they need to be very successful is for their teas to be known and appreciated around the world.

Thai people are very hard working, and would not ask for aid. A hand up however is appreciated by any hard-working person.

It is not only the tea farm workers that benefit from our sales, but the small craftsman who makes our wooden gift boxes, small local printers, and local graphics designers.

A purchase of Daokrajai Lanna Fine Teas not only brings you a wonderful beverage, but comfort in knowing that your purchase allows a healthier lifestyle for the current workers, and the possibility of employment for others.
